Updated September 2024:

We’ve added insights on the GoPro Hero 13 Black, Hero 13, and DJI Action 5, while removing the DJI Action 2 due to limited availability.

GoPro Hero 13 Black

The Hero 13 Black marks a significant upgrade to GoPro’s flagship model. While its design remains similar to previous versions, the addition of an interchangeable lens system greatly enhances its versatility. Besides the standard lens, users can opt for an Ultra Wide Lens Mod ($100) with a 177-degree field of view, a Macro Lens Mod ($130) for close-up shots, and an Anamorphic Lens Mod ($130) that provides a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio. The Anamorphic lens will be available next spring, while the others can be purchased now. Though these additional lenses increase the overall cost, you can acquire them as needed without a hefty initial investment.

I’m currently testing the Hero 13 Black, but I can already say it’s worth the $400 price tag for those serious about capturing action footage. Its new magnetic mounting system is a standout feature, and although GoPro has been a bit late to the party, they’ve finally caught up. Additionally, there’s a more affordable version, the Hero 13, which is simpler but still effective at $200. It shoots in 4K and lacks interchangeable lenses, making it a great option for those who want a straightforward action camera.

DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro stands out as a top-tier action camera. It even surpasses the GoPro in certain aspects, particularly in battery life, providing around two hours of continuous 4K recording in my tests. This camera can shoot in a 4:3 ratio at 120 fps and features a new SuperNight mode, which allows for 4K/30 footage at 16:9 with noise reduction for low-light conditions.

I’m still conducting tests on this model, but I’m already impressed by how seamlessly it integrates with the DJI Mic 2, significantly enhancing audio quality—better than what I’ve achieved with GoPro’s options, even with external mics. I also appreciate the smaller size, which makes it easier to mount. The unchanged mounting system is a plus, as it’s one of the best magnetic systems I’ve encountered.

While the GoPro Hero 13 offers superior 5.3K video quality, the Action 5 Pro integrates smoothly into the DJI ecosystem, making it an excellent choice if you already own DJI products like drones.

Insta360 Ace Pro

For anyone planning to film themselves, the Insta360 Ace Pro (8/10, Recommended) is an outstanding choice. Co-engineered with Leica, it boasts a superb lens and sensor, along with a unique flip-up screen that’s ideal for vlogging. Unlike other action cameras with small front displays, the Ace Pro features a large rear screen that flips up, making it easy to frame shots and capture unique angles.

Its video quality is comparable to our previous picks, using a sensor similar in size to that of the DJI Action 4. The Ace Pro offers excellent battery life and a magnetic mounting system that rivals DJI’s. There’s also a non-Pro version available at a lower price, but it lacks some advanced video features. If you can swing it, the Ace Pro is definitely worth the investment, but if you’re on a budget, the non-Pro version still provides a functional flip-up screen.

Insta360 One RS

If you’re seeking both an action camera and a 360-degree camera, look no further than the Insta360 One RS (8/10, Recommended). This innovative model features interchangeable lenses, including a 4K mod, a dual-lens 360-degree option, and a wide-angle Leica lens paired with a 1-inch sensor capable of 5K video. The best value comes from combining the 4K and 360 mods, but if budget allows, the Leica lens delivers some of the finest video quality from an action camera.

The One RS brings significant improvements over its predecessor, with the 4K mod now capable of 5.2K video and enhanced processing power that includes motion-smoothing capabilities without relying on an app. Additionally, Insta360 frequently updates its features via firmware, so you won’t need to purchase a new camera every year.

Insta360 Go 3S

The Insta360 Go 3S (9/10, Recommended) is a hybrid camera that transitions from a conventional action camera to a compact, wearable device. In action camera mode, it resembles other models in this guide, but the Go 3S is waterproof up to 33 feet (10 meters) when removed from its case. The case also serves as a remote monitor, and the powerful magnetic mounting system allows for creative angles and shots that other cameras can’t achieve.

The Go 3S offers 4K video resolution, making it easy to integrate with footage from other cameras. Its user-friendly design encourages spontaneous shooting; just stick it somewhere and start filming. The only downside is that it lacks an SD card, so I recommend opting for the larger 128-GB model.

GoPro Hero 12

The Hero 12 Black (8/10, Recommended) is still an exceptional choice, featuring impressive stabilization, Log video support, wireless mic compatibility, and a tripod mount. However, it does lack GPS support, which is a drawback for those who want that feature for tracking speed or location. Its price has recently dropped to $350, and further discounts are anticipated during upcoming sales.

The Hero 11 Black (9/10, Recommended) is also a solid option. If you want GPS capabilities but don’t wish to pay for the latest Hero 13 Black, the Hero 11 is a smart choice. It shares the same sensor and processor as the Hero 12 but lacks the latest stabilization technology. The Hero 11 is priced around $250 and is expected to see even lower prices during sales.

Insta360 X4 360 Camera

The line between action cameras and 360-degree cameras continues to blur, and the Insta360 X4 (8/10, Recommended) makes a compelling case for being effective at both. This hybrid camera delivers 8K 360 footage in a compact, user-friendly design. When you prefer not to shoot in 360, switch to single-lens mode and use it like a 4K action camera. The X4 is lightweight, slim, and capable of capturing high-resolution 72-MP spherical images.

This versatility makes it a great choice for those who primarily shoot 360-degree content but occasionally want to capture traditional action shots.

Olympus Tough TG-7

The Olympus TG-7 may not be ideal for extreme action sports, but it excels in underwater photography, making it a top choice for those environments. It features the largest sensor in this lineup (a micro four-thirds sensor). Although Olympus has exited the camera business, the TG-7 remains a premier option for underwater shooting.

It’s a rugged camera that is freeze-proof, crush-proof, dustproof, and shockproof (able to survive drops from 7 feet). Additionally, it includes advanced features like focus stacking for close-up shots, various add-ons, extra lenses, and even an underwater case for extended depth capabilities.

Honorable Mentions

Some previously recommended cameras still hold up well, even if they lag behind newer models.

  • DJI Action 4 for $299: This camera (8/10, Recommended) remains an excellent option with a superior magnetic mounting system, user-friendly interface, and impressive photo and video quality. While the Action 5 outperforms it in several areas, this budget-friendly choice is a solid investment, especially if you’re already using DJI products.
  • Oclu Action Camera for $199: With a unique flat design and top-mounted screen, the Oclu offers a different take on action cameras. It captures 4K video at 30 fps and 1080p at 120 fps for slow-motion shots. While its stabilization isn’t as effective as others, it excels in sound quality. For the price, it’s tough to beat the Oclu’s performance.
  • Affordable Cameras: Many budget options on Amazon often entice readers, but while they may offer 4K video for under $100, they lack effective stabilization. This can lead to shaky footage that’s hard to watch. While you might save money, investing an extra $100 for a GoPro Hero 10 or 11, especially during sales, could provide a much better experience. However, if you’re just starting with action cams, more affordable options like the Dragon Touch ($40) can be a good way to dip your toes in.

Best Accessories to Enhance Your Action Camera Experience

Once you have an action camera, you’re mostly set for various scenarios. Companies like GoPro, Insta360, and DJI offer mounts to attach your camera wherever you need it. However, there are some excellent accessories that can help you achieve those perfect shots. Here are a few favorites:

  • High-Quality microSD Card: While your camera may come with an SD card, I recommend using SanDisk’s Extreme Pro cards for their speed and reliability.
  • Suction Cup Mount: Ideal for cars, boats, and other smooth surfaces. They provide stable mounting for high-speed action.
  • Floating Hand Grip: Perfect for beach days or water activities, ensuring your camera stays buoyant.
  • Tripod and Selfie Stick: A tripod is essential for time-lapses, and a selfie stick is perfect for vlogging or capturing angles that are hard to reach.
  • Extra Batteries: Longer shooting sessions require extra batteries. Consider third-party options, but ensure they are compatible with your camera.
  • Cleaning Kit: A lens cleaning kit will help keep your camera spotless, especially if you’re filming in dust or sand.
