Smart home technology continues to evolve, offering solutions for everything from garage doors to lighting systems throughout your home. With a variety of smart accessories available for front doors—such as smart locks, video doorbells, and door sensors—why not take it a step further and create a smart door?
Home Depot recently introduced a new smart door manufactured by Feather River, featuring a smart glass window that integrates with the Hubspace platform. It’s now available for purchase on Home Depot’s website. To power the smart window, you’ll need either a USB-C connection or the included battery.
This is not the first smart door from the company, but it is the most budget-friendly option, priced between $798 and $998, depending on the size of the window. While still a significant investment, it’s a competitive price for a door featuring a large, controllable window.
Innovative Design The standout feature of the Smart Glass door is its ability to change the opacity of the window at the touch of a button. You can adjust the glass to be transparent, allowing natural light and outdoor views, or switch it to frosted for privacy. This dual functionality means you don’t have to choose between style and seclusion anymore.
The door operates via Home Depot’s Hubspace app, which also allows for voice commands through popular voice assistants like Amazon Alexa or Google Nest. Hubspace is Home Depot’s smart home ecosystem, launched in 2021, and is designed to seamlessly manage various connected devices, making it easy to incorporate into your home setup.
Constructed from paintable fiberglass and featuring decorative panels at the bottom, the Smart Glass door boasts a modern aesthetic. It comes in four different window sizes, allowing for customization. The least expensive option features a small Craftsman-style window at $798, while the larger three-quarter and full-size windows are priced at $998.
Balancing Aesthetics and Security One common concern for homeowners is whether a large window in the front door compromises security. While a clear window can enhance the aesthetic appeal and allow for natural light, it may not always provide a sense of safety. The Smart Glass door addresses this by allowing you to enjoy the benefits of light and visibility while still maintaining privacy from prying eyes or unwanted visitors.
Power Options and Limitations The Smart Glass door can be powered by a USB-C connection if an outlet is nearby, or it can operate on battery power, which lasts about two months depending on usage. In case of a Wi-Fi outage, you can still control the door via Bluetooth. If the power goes out, the door automatically switches the window to opaque mode, ensuring your privacy until the power is restored.
However, it’s worth noting that the Smart Glass door does not include a handle or lock, so you will need to select and install those separately. While Home Depot offers a more expensive smart door option with features like a Yale smart lock and a Ring doorbell for around $4,000, the Feather River model provides a blank slate for you to choose your preferred smart lock and handle.
While it’s somewhat disappointing that a smart lock isn’t included—especially since using Hubspace for both the door and the lock would streamline operations—this door still serves as a versatile option. Keep in mind that it is not Matter compatible, so you will need to use the Hubspace app to operate the door.
Starting today, the Smart Glass door is available for purchase on Home Depot’s website, alongside other Hubspace products, including a five-piece smart security system for $99 and a smart chest freezer priced at $299.
